Description

Abstract
The open sea laboratory based on ODAS Italia 1 buoy is a typical cas of rational use of a facility for multidisciplinary research on marine environment and technologies. The buoy was initially designed for meteo data acquisition. It was sccessively equipped to collect informaton on meteo-marine as well as biological parameters and gain more insight on the ecosystem. It is particularly stable against strong waves and, owing to its open sea location, offers a very interesting vantage point on the open sea environment, where the effect of the human activities is supposed to be negligible. In addition the sea bottom in the area, 1270 m deep, shows peaks and strong gradients and significan upwelling phenomena are expected.
