ARCHIMEDE

Introduction

The meteo-marine data archive ARCHIMEDE was an initiative promoted by APAT. The Archimede project began in February 2005 and ended in May 2009.

The Archimede project aimed to retrieve the historical series of meteo-marine observations, to elaborate them and to realize a national database.

The data inserted in the meteo-marine archive Archimede came from the APAT Data Bank, OGS, University of Salerno and Snamprogetti S.p.A..

The information from the meteo-marine archive data Archimede can be extracted by spatial-temporal selections or by measure platform.

Objectives

The information archive of meteo-marine data Archimede is an initiative promoted by APAT, who committed to OGS the recovering and standardization of data activity, by projecting and realizing the database containing waves, sea levels, current and meteorological measurements.

The Archimede project began in February 2005.

The Archimede project aims to retrieve the historical series of meteo-marine observations, currently spread in a large number of public and private Institutions, to elaborate them and to realize a national database available in the whole Country as reference for interventions and studies in the coastal-marine field.

All data inserted in the ARCHIMEDE archive are available to "Protezione Civile" for the Institution aims and each participant will have the opportunity to access the archive in real time.

The need of constructing an observations database is tied to the current availability of a wide and heterogeneous quantity of data on coastal marine climate, even because it becomes more difficult to obtain part of those data for climatic studies or numeric model calibration.

The data management inside an unique database guarantees the homogeneity of the quality check procedures and at the same time the system modularity allows to associate among them different information (for instance for both fixed instruments and measure cruises, meteorological and marine data) concerning different time periods.

Each national or regional participant Institution has online access to the database, as established in the Data Policy of the ARCHIMEDE archive.

Data Distribution

The data inserted in the meteo-marine archive Archimede comes from the APAT Data Bank (Rete Ondametrica Nazionale and Rete Mareografica Nazionale), OGS, University of Salerno and Snamprogetti S.p.A..

On the whole, here there are the space-temporal distributions for macro-area of measure:
